Ellenville

Ellenville is the largest community in Wawarsing and one of the oldest established villages in Ulster County. Always a town of industry, the village is also the center of civic life in the town, hosting the town government building on Canal Street and the offices of the town Supervisor, Clerk, Collector, Comptroller, Code Enforcement Officer, Assessor and other agencies, as well as the Court House and Town Committee meeting rooms.

            As newcomers have bought homes in the village, they’ve brought with them something of a renaissance, reflected in the recent growth of the arts community, theatre groups and summer stock. Other cultural assets include the Terwilliger House, which offers a substantial collection of local history in the form of useful and whimsical glass products from Ellenville Glass Works, stoneware from Ellenville Pottery (both of which were active in the nineteenth century) and traditional period farm and household tools, along with Civil War-era records and documents.

            Ellenville is also a popular home for D&H Rail Trail fans, avid hikers and mountain climbers, hang gliders and other outdoor enthusiasts who take advantage of the rare opportunities presented in the area by the Shawangunk Ridge, Sam’s Point Preserve, Minnewaska State Park Preserve and other sites unique to the Hudson Valley.
